Mid-Weight Engineer (Full-Stack, Backend-Leaning)

Location: Remote (UK)
Type: Full-time, permanent
Salary: £50,000 (depending on experience)
Start: ASAP
The Role
Build real-time big screen crowd games at scale for the likes of FIFA and Wimbledon. We're looking for an experienced backend-leaning full-stack engineer to join our team.
You'll work across our entire stack on a variety of projects - from contributing to our new crowd games platform built to support our next generation of games to reskinning existing games for clients, maintaining products like our 50,000+ player Quiiz and PenKick, and tackling whatever needs doing to keep our events running smoothly. You'll work closely with our team to ensure everything works reliably when it counts.
About Us
Piing makes games for crowds: BIG games on BIG screens creating BIG engagement: 50,000+ player games played on big screens at the greatest events on Earth, played by fans using their phones as controllers, all through the browser. In 2025 we were at Glastonbury, Wimbledon, F1 and football across the planet. In 2026, we will be at the biggest football event in the world, breaking into new sports and territories, making the world more fun one game at a time and continuing on our journey of entertaining fans at the greatest events on Earth.
We’re a small talented team with a strict No Assholes Policy to hiring - and that goes for the founders and our investors too ;)
About You
4+ years working professionally on production projects
Comfortable moving between frontend, backend and infrastructure - you don't wait to be told which layer needs attention
You're genuinely into this stuff - you read about it, build side projects, and keep up with what's happening without being told to
Enjoy grasping technical complexity - there's a lot going on under the hood and you find that interesting rather than intimidating
Excited by early-stage platform work - we're building scalable infrastructure from the ground up and there's real complexity to navigate. You want to be part of that, learn through it, and help shape it
Happy to context-switch - one day you're contributing to platform development, the next you're turning around a production reskin or keeping existing products healthy. You don't find that frustrating, you find it interesting
Work well in a team, value pairing on tricky problems, and enjoy sharing knowledge
Can explain technical concepts clearly and contribute to honest discussions about direction and approach
Tech Stack
We need someone from an AWS / React / TypeScript / Node.js background - that's where we spend 90% of our time. What matters more than covering everything is that you're willing to touch whatever's needed and learn your way through it.
As a guide, these are some of the main technologies we work with:
TypeScript / JavaScript / Node.js / React / Git / Docker / Postgres / MySQL / Linux CLI / AWS / IaC (Pulumi / CloudFormation or similar) / Web & Networking fundamentals / Monorepo tooling / WebSocket.
Key Responsibilities

Learn and Share: Learn from the team, receive feedback constructively, and contribute to our collaborative culture by sharing knowledge and supporting each other's growth.
Stay Flexible: Move between tasks as priorities shift - we run live events alongside our products so occasionally you'll help keep things running smoothly when it counts.
Team Culture
Small team, big impact: Bringing people together is what we do, and that starts with our close-knit team, supporting each other to make the world more fun.
Everyone's voice counts: We make decisions together and value input from the whole team, regardless of role or seniority.
We hire for fit: We look for people who share our enthusiasm for what we build and who'll thrive in a small team where everyone's contribution matters.
Happy on a Mac: We'll supply one! We're Mac-only - we like things that just work.
